Dermal Fillers in Chicago by Board-Certified Dermatologist

Anatomy-driven filler placement for natural, lasting results

Dermal fillers are among the most powerful tools in facial rejuvenation — but they are only as effective as the plan behind them. Poorly placed filler can distort facial proportions. Thoughtfully placed filler can restore structure, balance, and confidence without surgery.

At Cheung Aesthetics & Wellness, every filler treatment is overseen by Dr. Jessie Cheung, a board-certified dermatologist whose approach is rooted in facial anatomy, skin science, and long-term planning — not trends or templates. Dr. Cheung evaluates each patient’s bone structure, fat distribution, skin quality, and aging patterns before recommending a single syringe.

Patients throughout Chicago, Oak Park, Naperville, Hinsdale, and the western suburbs choose Dr. Cheung for filler that looks like them — restored, not altered.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels designed to restore lost volume, rebuild structural support, and improve facial contour. Unlike Botox, which relaxes muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, fillers work by physically adding or stimulating volume beneath the skin.

Most dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found in skin, connective tissue, and joint fluid. HA is responsible for binding water molecules and maintaining tissue hydration. When formulated into an injectable gel through a process called cross-linking, HA provides controlled volume that integrates with surrounding tissue while remaining soft and natural to the touch.

Other filler categories stimulate the body’s own collagen production rather than adding volume directly. These biostimulatory fillers trigger a fibroblast response that builds new collagen architecture over weeks to months, providing gradual, longer-lasting improvement.

The distinction matters because different fillers serve different purposes — and choosing the right product for each area of the face is one of the most critical decisions in injectable treatment.

Why Volume Loss Matters More Than Wrinkles

Many patients come in focused on wrinkles, but the visible signs of facial aging actually begin much deeper, in the bone and fat layers that provide the face’s underlying scaffolding.

Starting as early as the late 20s, the aging process includes:

  • Bone resorption — the maxilla (upper jaw), mandible (lower jaw), and orbital rim gradually lose density and volume, reducing the skeletal framework that supports soft tissue
  • Fat pad descent and atrophy — the deep and superficial fat compartments of the face shift downward and lose volume at different rates, creating hollowing in some areas and heaviness in others
  • Ligament laxity — the retaining ligaments that anchor soft tissue to bone weaken, allowing tissue to sag
  • Collagen and elastin degradation — structural proteins in the dermis break down over time, reducing skin firmness and elasticity

This cascade of changes produces visible hollowing under the eyes, flattening of the cheeks, deepening of the nasolabial folds, loss of jawline definition, and an overall “deflated” appearance — even in patients with relatively smooth skin.

Dermal fillers, when placed strategically, address these foundational changes rather than simply masking surface-level lines. This is why Dr. Cheung evaluates the face as a structural system, not a collection of isolated wrinkles.

Dr. Cheung's Medical Approach to Dermal Fillers

A Board-Certified Dermatologist does matter when it comes to fillers.

The safety and quality of filler results depend heavily on injector expertise. As a board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Cheung brings medical training that extends well beyond injection technique:

  • Vascular anatomy expertise — understanding the location and pathway of facial arteries and veins is critical for avoiding vascular occlusion, one of the most serious filler complications. Dermatologists are trained to recognize and manage this risk
  • Skin biology knowledge — Dr. Cheung assesses skin thickness, elasticity, collagen density, and sun damage before determining filler placement. Thin or damaged skin responds differently to filler than healthy, resilient skin
  • Product pharmacology — different filler formulations have different rheological properties (viscosity, elasticity, cohesivity). Dr. Cheung selects products based on how they will behave in specific tissue planes
  • Complication management — if issues arise, Dr. Cheung has the medical training and tools to intervene, including the ability to dissolve HA fillers with hyaluronidase

Conservative, Anatomy-Driven Philosophy: Dr. Cheung does not follow injection templates or trend-driven protocols. Her approach is defined by several key principles:

Whole-face assessment first. Before treating any single area, Dr. Cheung evaluates bone structure, fat distribution, muscle movement, and skin quality across the entire face. This prevents the piecemeal approach that often leads to imbalance over time.

Less filler, placed precisely. Dr. Cheung frequently recommends fewer syringes than patients expect. Strategic placement at key structural points can achieve more impactful results than large volumes spread broadly.

Staged treatment over time. Rather than aggressive correction in a single session, Dr. Cheung often recommends building results gradually, allowing tissue to adapt and preventing the overfilled appearance that develops from repeated high-volume treatments.

Willingness to say no. When filler is not the right solution, or when a patient has had too much filler elsewhere, Dr. Cheung will recommend alternatives or decline treatment entirely. This protects long-term facial integrity.
